The Freedom of Bedford granted to RAF Cardington 1959

Frank Naylor 5

This photograph was sent in by Frank Naylor who served in the Balloon Unit at Cardington and was part of the parade on the day. Frank is to the left of the mayor indicated by an arrow.

In his speech the Mayor referred to the station as well known and respected for its work in the development of the barrage balloons which had served the country well during WWII and for its status as a Recruit Training Centre for the entire RAF. The link between Bedford and RAF Cardington "had always been strong and it was in recognition of this close and happy association over so many years that the Freedom was being granted."
