September 1939 - War is Declared

Below are extracts from the stations daily ORBS for the month of September 1939:

Sept 3: On declaration of war all necessary action taken. Station Defense Scheme brought into operation. Provision of Anti Sabotage Guard by a detachment (2 platoons) of the 5/16th.Foot who arrived 31.08.39. A,A machine gun posts also manned by this detachment. Cypher Staff (already formed) in operation.

Sept 4: 02.45 Telephone Message "Air Raid Warning YELLOW."
03.50 "ALL CLEAR"

Sept 6: 07.30 Telephone Message "Air Raid Warning RED."
09.05 "ALL CLEAR" No enemy action.
Tented accommodation provided for the 5/16th Foot detachment.

Sept 8: Tented accommodation provided by station equipment section for No 2 RAF Receiving
Centre. Lt. J Darlow and 2nd Lt. H.L.Hoppe both of the 5/16th Foot attached to the
station
.
Sept 15: No 11 The Highway, Shortstown taken over for conversion to Single Officers Quarters.

Sept 18: No 12 The Highway, and Nos 41 & 43 The Drive Shortstown taken over for conversion
to Single Officers Quarters.

Sept 19: The Station Commander inspected the "Black Out" of the station form the roof of No 2 Shed
and found results to be highly satisfactory.

Sept 23: Final completion of 90 (ninety) "Summers" Type shelters.* These with 25 trench units give
shelter to 5,000 bodies. Approximate strength of station (including civilians) being 7,000
leaves 2,000 bodies without shelter.

* These shelters were Anderson shelters manufactured by John Summers & Sons.
